Washing- Hair can be washed everyday, but it is recommended that you only wash your hair a couple times a week. The less you wash it the longer it will last. Do not wash your hair upside down in the sink. This will cause your hair to tangle which is not good for the extensions. Wash your hair in the shower so that the hair stays in its natural direction. Moisture is a very important factor to consider when caring for hair extensions. The best shampoo to use for your hair extensions is shampoo for dry hair that adds moisture. Never use shampoo’s that are for oily hair or clarifying shampoos that remove product buildup from your hair. These will only dry out your hair, and that is not good for the extensions.

Conditioning- As mentioned above Moisture is very important factor when caring for hair extensions, but if your extensions were applied with adhesive, it is important that the conditioner not be applied close to the scalp where the extensions are attached. This will soften the adhesive and may cause the seal to loosen or break. Conditioning the rest of the hair is fine, and recommended.

Brushing- The most important thing to keep in mind when brushing your extensions is to always start at the ends of your hair, and slowly work your way up to the roots. While you are brushing your hair, place your other hand at the top of your head to holding the extensions in place. This will help prevent your hair from stretching, breaking or shedding. This method of combing your hair is always recommended whether you are wearing extension or not. Don’t be afraid to brush your hair, brushing it a few times a day will help keep the tangles away. When your hair is tangled, use a wide-tooth comb. This will help get rid of the tangles that can be caused by a regular hair brush

If you are having problems with static electricity, try using an Ionic brush, they are great for diminishing static from your extensions.

Styling Products – Find a great leave in conditioner that you can spray on and use it! This is a great way to care for your hair extensions. Don’t be afraid to use a glossifier this is a great product that can be used on the ends and makes your hair look shiny and healthy. Just remember that a little goes a long way, and make sure not to apply it near the attachments if an adhesive has been used.

Chemical Treatments- Human hair extensions can be colored and permed. However, most hair has already been colored and permed for you. If you want curly hair it is best to buy the hair that is already permed. When you want a straighter look, it is much easier to just straighten it with a flat iron.

The extensions have already been processed and sterilized and it is recommended that you do not add any more chemical treatments to them. Just like real human hair, this can be drying, and damaging. If you mess up and don’t get the color you were going for, they could easily become ruined an unusable. If you decide that coloring is something you want to do, then I would suggest having a professional do this for you. Using a semi permanent color or color conditioner is best. Before coloring your extensions use a small piece to test the color. Some brands will include a couple of tester strands just for that purpose.

Because there are so many different brands of hair extensions, please remember that when caring for hair extensions it is always important to follow the directions that came with your purchase.
